All Summer Long

August 11, 2009

Each day I see more and more of my Facebook friends talk about school beginning and the summer winding down.  IT”S NOT OVER YET, Y’ALL!!  We still have some warm weekends ahead for parties and barbeques.

In hopes of keeping the summer going, I want to share a wonderful little drink from Brazil called the Batida (ba-CHEE-da), which means “beat”.  When thinking about Brazil, almost immediately the mind snaps to the caipirinha, but this little dandy will surely win your heart over.  And for the astute cocktailian you will recognize a similarity to another drink when you see the recipe.

Any fruit can be used for this drink, but my favorite is kiwi.

Kiwi Batida

2 oz Cachaca

1/2 Kiwi, skin removed

1 tsp sugar

2 oz sweetened condensed milk

1/2 cup ice

In a blender, combine all ingredients, and blend until smooth.  Pour into a stemmed glass and garnish with a kiwi wheel.

This can also be prepared without a blender by the way.  Simply use crushed ice in your glass and hard shake you ingredients (you might want to muddle the fruit first to get the most flavor).

And yes, there are some similarities to the “colada”.   Great minds think alike; especially after a couple of drinks!
