GIFTS FROM THE BAR: Part 1

December 6, 2010

The sweet end-of-the-year holidays have descended upon us once again , and like always we scramble to show those in our lives a little more love and appreciation.  And in the hustle and bustle of the”Techo World” where we are lucky to get a response to a tweet much less a text message or, God forbid, an actual phone call, this time of year becomes even more important.  And as technology takes away more and more of our precious face to face interaction, I believe finding a genuine, heart-felt gift for those who help give meaning to our lives is even that much more important.

So instead of sending a bottle of booze for the holidays as we all try to dumb and numb our sense of loneliness under the guise of cheer (don’t worry part 3 will explain it all with resolution), I suggest going the extra mile on the booze gifts this year.

THE FLASK

Everyone loves a flask.  There is a debocherous sexinesss to whipping one out when having a drink may not be the most appropriate, yet when it is passed all share in a communal  gathering that cannot be duplicated in a chatroom.  Go the extra mile here if you choose to gift this item by engraving not with name or initials, but with a shared moment or catch-phrase.

______ OF THE MONTH CLUB

It’s a gift that keep on giving long past the Holidays (in a good way) and the price range in pretty affordable at any budget.

BITTERS

Bitters are abounding these days and can be found in many different forms.  Grab a gift pack of unique cocktail bitters like Bitter End, Urban Moonshine, Boker’s or Bar Code.

 BAR WARE

Any level  bartender or cocktail geek will appreciate a vintage barware gift.  Personally I have shakers that date back to Prohibition and can never get enough (my fanily begs to differ here).  Cross reference what you do and where you shop so you make sure you’re getting the real thing versus a replica.  Another great place to find said items is Estate Sales in your neighborhood.

It doesn’t take much to find a great gift from the bar to show your pal how special they really are..  And it only takes about 1% more to really make it a personal and memorable gift.

 Happy Holidays

Thank you for the thoughts Chris!

How about a quote from Benjamin Franklin:

Wish not so much to live long as to live well.

Benjamin Franklin, Poor Richard’s Almanack, 1738

    or aha! Bob Newhart:

All I can say about life is, Oh God, enjoy it!

    Bob Newhart

    Cheers!
