Kraken Up

January 5, 2011

Let no joyful voice be heard!

“Let no man look up at the sky with hope!

And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake!

THE KRAKEN!”

Davy Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean

If you have ever read a story about the seas, you have not doubtingly heard of the sinister creature known as the Kraken.  Few have survived that have actually seen this legend, and I fear for the mind that wasn’t driven insane by its sight.  One sighting, one moment is now preserved in distillate.

Kraken Black Spiced Rum is a mystery in and of itself, much like it’s namesake.  But don;t write this spirit off as novelty, for it does show some  true promise to the world of mixology.  Kraken’s squid like packaging nad Old-World style labelling definitely makes it a stand out on the back bar.  It;s rich ink like color equally stands out in a glass.  Swirling this rum around the glass creates tentacle-like legs as the rich liquids seeps back to the depths.  Its nose also full and rich with cinnamon, clove, nad cacao.  A thick lingering mouth=feel with added toffee and forward  molasses flavors.  Rich, thick, and powerful at 94 proof.

Sailors and Captains are not the only game for spiced rum, and short of making your own, I recommend a try of Kraken if nothing more than comparison to the more popular brands.  In experimenting with this fine little rum, I found it lends well to falernum syrup, ginger, coffee, chocolate and citrus.  Just for fun, I even combined it with my normal overproof rum to make Falernum Syrup, and it added a wonderful depth of character and I will continue its use in my syrups (as well as a few cocktails as well)

Captain’s Demise

  • 4 Blackberries
  • 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz Falernum Syrup
  • 2 oz  Kraken Rum
  • 1 dash Orange Bitters
  • Muddle blackberries, Lemon juice and Falernum in the bottom of a mixing glass.  Add Kraken and ice then shake.  Strain up into a chilled cocktail glass.  Dash with Orange Bitters.

Put and little beast in your belly and RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!!
